Teacher Awarded $95K after dead naming a student

Hi Cuties,

This one has me scratching my head and saying "what the hell?"

A retired math teacher at the Fort Riley Middle School has been awarded $95,000 from the school district after a settlement agreed that her First Amendment rights had been violated when she used a student's dead name and was required not to tell their parents about the conversation.

Like I said.  WTF?

The teacher in question was reprimanded and suspended for addressing the child by their deadname and insisting on using the deadname on related paperwork.

For those who don't know, a deadname is the name that a transgender person leaves behind when they transition to a new name and gender and burying the old name and identity behind them.

It was also argued that the school prohibited the teacher from telling the parents about the incident.

"This case provides straightforward lessons for Kansas school boards: Schools shouldn't lie to parents and teachers don't forfeit their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse door," said Joshua Ney, a lawyer.

In May, the ADF Center for Academic Freedom indicated that the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas allowed the lawsuit to proceed and found that she was likely to win on her First Amendment free exercise of religion claim.

Of course the school district agreed to settle the case for $95,000.

I wonder if the teachers in Florida who have to deal with Governor Gruber, I mean Ron DeSantis and his draconian "don't say gay" law.

But hey, we're not in Kansas Toto.

What? Me worry?
